FAQ

FAQ

Q: How do I apply for home repair assistance?

A: To receive an application, you can print it online, pick it up in the office, or call us and ask to have one mailed to you. Once completed, applications should be returned to our office with the required accompanying documentation.

Q: How do I know if I’m eligible for assistance?

A: HPI’s programs are income-based; we use federal income guidelines, which compare household income to the number of people in the household. HPI must also deem the repair an emergency based on state and federal guidelines. Our application is designed to determine eligibility based on income and type of repair needed.

Q: What kinds of repairs does HPI do?

A: We do emergency repairs and accessibility modifications. An emergency is determined if the health and safety of the occupant is compromised by the state of the disrepair. Some common repairs include: broken windows and doors, floor and roof repair, and wheelchair ramps.

Q: How long does it take to receive repairs?

A: We try to service every client within a reasonable time frame. However, these time frames vary based on a number of factors. Completion of repairs depends on: the availability of materials, the availability of labor, the level of emergency, and the time the application was received.

Q: What if I can provide either the labor or the tools for my repair?

A: HPI has a self-help program in which we provide assistance to homeowners who can in some way complete their own repairs. Often self-help projects get done faster because they are a smaller time and/or financial commitment on HPI’s part. Clients may have someone to complete the labor, such as a church group, family member, or friend, and just need the materials. HPI is also willing to provide labor if the homeowner has access to the materials needed for the repair.

Q: I have no previous home repair experience. Can I still volunteer with HPI?

A: HPI is always happy to welcome new volunteers, both for home repair assistance and office work. There will always be a senior volunteer on site, so if you are unfamiliar with any tools during a project, just ask! We do ask that you read and review the Safety Packet and fill out the Liability Waiver on the Volunteer page prior to volunteering with us.
